Why “Called to Disciple”?
“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” Matthew 28:18-20 KJV
After Jesus is raised from the dead and meets with his disciples he commands them to go and make disciples of all nations. This statement is not only for the 11 disciples who were with Jesus that day but for all believers in Christ. If you are a Christian, a Christ follower, you are called to go and make disciples of all nations. You can rest assured knowing that this is part of his will for your life.
I love what Spurgeon writes about Jesus sending out the disciples, “Jesus said, “Go” to some very imperfect disciples. “Who is to go out of that first band of disciples? It is Peter, the rash and the headstrong. It is John, who sometimes wishes to call fire from heaven to destroy men. It is Philip, with whom the Savior has been so long, and yet he has not known him. It is Thomas, who must put his finger into the print of the nails, or he will not believe him. Yet the Master says to them, “Go ye; all power is given unto me, therefore go ye. You are as good for my purpose as anybody else would be. There is no power in you, I know, but then all power is in me, therefore go ye.”
As a mother to five kids I know that I am called to disciple my children and I’m reminded when reading this passage in Matthew that disciples are made. Disciples can be described as a student or a scholar and as Christians we’re students of Christ, of his Word. Discipling is not done alone but through a community of Christians doing life together and learning more about the Gospel with the ever-present Holy Spirit. Jesus doesn’t send the disciples out into the world alone but, he promises to be with them, with us, always.
I hope that you’ll join me in my journey of being a stay-at-home wife and mother who does life very imperfectly but enjoys learning as I go while growing in the knowledge of Christ. As you read my blog my hope is that you’ll be encouraged, challenged, and know that you’re not alone in this walk. Thank you for being here.
