Today, I had the privilege to speak on a very small scale during a Ladies Gathering. This small part was just a seven minute lead up into a prayer session but it had held a weight to me.
This got me thinking about the importance of public speaking, not just in any realm, but the realm of Christianity. When there is a Christian speaker in any capacity that is a big responsibility. That person will be (hopefully) sharing the word of God with an audience of people and the message matters. The theology matters. The study up to the event matters.
During this event there were great speakers who have a wealth of wisdom and shared their thoughts beautifully. One could tell that they were gifted in this area. They were able to articulate their studies into careful words that conveyed the Gospel message in a way that everyone there could understand it and relate to it in some degree.
I wonder, though, about the person who wasn’t ‘gifted’ in this area of public speaking. The person who has a hard time putting words together in a way that would explain what’s going through their mind. I think I would fall under this category and yet I always seem to say yes when asked to speak or write.
I’ve always loved to challenge myself and stretch my abilities to see just what could be possible. I’m not the best writer but here I am starting a blog to stretch and grow my ability to write. I’m not the greatest speaker. I rely heavily on my notes and instead of bullet points on a page I write out every word so I don’t forget something or get mixed up in my message.
I realize that conveying Gods word in a sober manner is of utmost importance but I think that in the past I’ve taken that to the extreme. I’ve thought to myself that this is too important to share because I could mess it all up. Almost like carrying precious china across a room filled with rambunctious toddlers afraid that I could trip and fall and shatter it at any second.
That’s pride talking and it took some time for me to figure out that my pride was holding me back from being used by God. When I was focused on my ability (whether good or bad), what I’d look like standing up in front of people, my fluency, etc. I was really just being self-centered and prideful. And I think we all, if we’re honest with ourselves, would second that to some degree.
Today, I want to encourage you to step out of the box that you’ve created for yourself. Repent of your prideful heart and allow God to shape you into a mouthpiece for His glory. If you’re a Christian you are called to disciple. You don’t have to have to fall under the official title of ‘ministry’ to be in ministry. Jesus told His disciples to go out and make more disciples and do you know that that command has carried on generation to generation and that’s how you and I have come to know the good news of Jesus Christ!?
You’re called to more than taking the backseat of your Christian walk. Yes, allow Jesus to be the driver of your life but take some responsibility for the gift you’ve been given. Share the soul saving news that Jesus has come, He conquered death on the cross and paid the debt of sin in our place, and He’s coming back again.
What can you do for Christ? Whatever it is I know it requires some form of public speaking. Writing on this blog is somewhat of a form of ‘public speaking’. Ask Him to use you and allow Him to grow you for His glory.
