Is it important to read your Bible?
It amazes me how many times I hear people tell me they don’t read their Bible. Their reasons are usually because 1. They don’t understand what they’re reading OR 2. they don’t think it’s really that important.
I’ll tell you what my reason was, I didn’t understand the old English used in my Bible and I thought I needed to be a Bible scholar in order to understand what God really meant in His word. You know when your pastor tells you what the key word in the verse means in its original language {Greek or Hebrew} during a sermon to make it more clear to you what the meaning is? Yeah, I thought I needed to be able to do that for every verse in the Bible. I believed there was some hidden meaning behind the really important parts of the Bible that only pastors and teachers learned in college and I was just a two-time college dropout.
Those were lies from the enemy to keep me from opening Gods word and learning to love what He loves and abhor what He abhors. The enemy wanted to keep me away from learning what God actually says in His word rather than the morphed version of it that he will entice you with. {Not much has changed since the garden}
Don’t let the enemy lie to you any longer! Just be diligent in what the Lord asks of you by reading His written word. When you open your Bible and start reading the words of God you’ll grow. You will grow spiritually, relationally, and in maturity in general. During church services, as your pastor teaches on a book of the Bible you’ll start picking things up that are more “scholarly” like Greek or Hebrew words and so on. And you’ll be able to think more critically when it comes to your every day life.
Doesn’t it make sense that simply not reading your Bible would be in compliance with what our enemy wants? Reading it makes such a difference in a believer’s life. So I want to encourage you to just open it every day and read a chapter or two.
A quick how-to
There’s tons of people out there with their own opinions on how to read the Bible so why not give you mine as well. :}
Apps
First, theres an app called the Bible App {it has a picture of the Bible on the front} and it’s free to use and download. On it you can follow plans and the app will read the words to you {if you choose to}, you can download different versions of the Bible, and you can ask friends to join your plans for some accountability if you have a goal of reading a certain amount of the Bible or so many days straight or just for fun. There’s also the Dwell app with mostly the same features however, you can set background music and the plan I follow {The Bible Recap} will read the daily Bible chapters and then go straight into the podcast episode that corresponds with that day automatically. I like that feature because I don’t get sidetracked on my way to the podcast app. This app does cost some money though. And the last app I wanted to mention is Bible.is. It reads the Bible in more of an audiobook form. There’s different voices for different characters and background noises. It helps me to keep up with the conversations that happen and just bring things more to life. It’s great for kids as well. {leave me a comment if you decide to try any of these out or if you have a suggestion}
Physical Bible
Second, now that we’ve got the technology options out of the way, we can talk for a second about reading your physical Bible on your own.
Here’s my opinion on that one… just open it and start reading. Maybe have a notebook for questions that you can go back to or things that stuck out to you or the to-do list that keeps nagging you. Just keep reading and try to make it a regular habit. Commit to it for a year and see what happens.
As you commit to reading it, despite your level of motivation or desire, your life will change. So make 2025 the year you actually read your Bible. It doesn’t even have to be the whole thing but making the commitment to just reading God word will make all the difference.
Let me know in the comments section if you’re committing to reading your Bible this year.
