The Quiet Life

What if it’s not your lot in life to be the next Elizabeth Elliot, Joan of Arc or Mother Theresa. What if you’re just meant to embrace a quiet life while being diligent with the Father’s business?

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 says,”But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.” (KJV)

I love verses 11 and 12 (italicized).

Paul’s words are an encouragement to me this morning as I go about my business of raising my children and keeping my home. The quiet work I do at home is just as important as the missionary in Africa. I’m discipling five children 24/7. I’m learning self-control because little eyes and ears are always with me. I’m growing in my faith because I have a responsibilty to train up my children in the way they should go.

If I’m not mindful of the thoughts that roll through my head, I can find myself comparing my life to others who seem to be more “on fire” for God or have a better relationship with Him because they’re more seen. (They are absolutely part of the body of Christ and are using their talents to spread the gospel, but this post is for the less seen work.)

The work I do in my home will often go unnoticed but it’s what I’ve always felt drawn to even before I became a Christian. I think my talent may be raising babies and keeping my home and encouraging others that it’s ok if that’s what you do as well while keeping the center of your home always Jesus.

And that’s a beautiful testimony of a life well lived.
