If you’re a mom I’m sure you’ve heard a saying that goes something like… it’s time to get your pink back! It’s referring to color change in a flamingo after it has babies. While caring for its young, the mother will have a pale color and then get its pink, vibrant color back when not caring so intensely for her baby. This is the idea of mothers (the human kind) getting their pink back.
This has always been unsettling for me. Do you see why?
We’re told that our children are life-sucking creatures that steal our vibrancy, joy, and freedom and as soon as they don’t need us for every single facet of survival we’ll FINALLY be able to focus on ourselves and get our pink back. So we shove our 3 year old aside as soon as she can use the bathroom and fix a simple snack and we get to check out while we build our dream life. Ahhhhh, the freedom.
I somewhat joke but am I the only one who sees that it’s not too far from the truth in some cases? It’s a sad thing to see a mother push her children aside to “find herself again”.
Maybe the person you were before children was just a phase of life you were in and now, you’re still you, you’re just a new version of yourself. And that’s ok! Now you’re a mother who is devoted to raising your children as well as growing yourself.. simultaneously.
It’s a fulfilling thing to put EVERYTHING and EVERYONE aside that isn’t your husband or children. While you have children in the home they have to be the one of your top priorities (God, spouse, children, x, y, z).
Maybe if mothers were encouraged more in the home then the work done in the home would be more encouraging and children wouldn’t grow up without a foundation of love and security that stems from the parents being 100% all in for their children.
Moms, the work you’re doing day and night is absolutely essential for a healthy child. When you keep choosing your child over outside events, opportunities, or anything it shows them that they’re loved, they’re important, and that you’re a safe place for them to go.
Keep up the good work.
